SNP Level 2 Traineeship Scheme Revealed

5 April 2012 Martin Rooney No Comments

phpe3TUg6Details have just been revealed of the SNP Council External Traineeship Scheme; to recruit 200 Level 2 Modern Apprentices.   The SNP scheme is targeted at young people in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance. The Council will hold a Jobs Fair in Clydebank Shopping Centre on Wednesday 18th April and a second Jobs Fair in the Dumbarton Campus of Clydebank College on 25th April. (The Dumbarton Campus is situated in the old Co-op in Dumbarton Town Centre). The Level 2 SVQ courses will be done in two batches of 100. The first batch of traineeships will be recruited during 2012; and the second batch of 100 traineeships will be available in 2013.  Labour Corporate Services spokesman Councillor Patrick McGlinchey said: ‘I am not surprised that the SNP had opted for the Traineeship Scheme as they don’t have a detailed knowledge of the employability service and have simply gone along with the cheapest option to reduce the number of people on Job Seeker Allowance. Labour Councillors had opted for a more sustainable option which incentivised young people and paid them £6.20 an hour.’  The Level 2 Traineeships will give young unemployed people an opportunity to learn and gain qualifications that will improve their chances of gaining full time employment.  The training runs over 9 months and trainees will be recruited between April and May – although the Hospitality jobs start later as they involve working in the schools, so they will have a start date of August 2012. At present Job Seekers Allowance pays around £57 per week and the Level 2 Modern Apprenticeship courses will pay around £110 per week. The hourly rate works out at £2.65. Councillor McGlinchey added: ‘I am deeply disappointed that the SNP has adopted a scheme that undervalues young people and pays a miserly £2.65 per hour. There is a real risk that this will alienate and act as a disincentive to young people.’  The first batch of traineeships will include:

  • Roads x 4
  • Business Administration x 30
  • Hospitality x 24
  • Care x 20
  • Leisure x 6
  • Green-Space x 16

It is envisaged that the Council will continue to support the Employability Programme in future years to ensure that we give future generations of young people the opportunities they need to kick start their careers.

Notes:

1.       Labour External Modern Apprenticeship Scheme would have provided 73 Modern Apprentices based on a rate of £6.20 per hour.

2.       The SNP have decided to fund the 200 Traineeship places with a pay rate of £2.65 per hour. This option was recognised in the Labour Employability Programme but it was not funded by Labour as it was felt that it would not incentivise young people and other, more sustainable alternatives were available.
