John Millar: Community Safety Spokesperson

John 2

John was the vice chair of St. Ronan’s Primary School Board and played an active part in his community over the years. He was involved in running and supporting a range of community groups such as Braehead Amateur Football Club where he was, player, manager and coach over a four year period. As a parent he also became involved with Renton Craigandro Football Club where he was a Scottish Football Association coach for over 5 years.  John said: ‘‘Every parent knows that it is important to get young people involved in organised sports at an early age. Apart from keeping them fit and active it builds confidence, teaches them life skills like how to get on with others and importantly it sets the foundation for a healthier, longer  and more fulfilling life  Like any parent I want the best start for all the young people of the Vale of Leven area .’’ John worked in Polaroid for thirteen years before taking up employment at Faslane in 1989. He served 8 years as a shop steward in Faslane and he knows the importance of ensuring that the views of the people he represents are listened to. John said: ‘‘As a workplace representative I had to deal with a wide range of issues on behalf of the people I served. I find that most people want to know that you understand their problem and that you will do your utmost to find a solution. Being able to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life is one of my key strengths. ’’John understands the day to day pressures of modern living and the impact that this can have on individuals and their families. John said: ‘‘People have much more complicated lives these days and this can put an enormous strain on hard working families. It can be difficult for ordinary people to balance their work, their home life and still take an active part in their community. It’s important that people make time for each other. Simple things like making time to visit elderly relatives or going to church with the family brings  routine and stability to busy family lives.’’  John  lives in Bonhill with his wife & two children he believes that education is very important and he wants to see young people to have opportunities so that young people can improve their quality of life. Regeneration is another issue John is concerned about. He wants to see the regeneration of Alexandria, Dumbarton and Clydebank so that the quality of our environment is improved and sustainable work opportunities are created for local people.
